Coach

Donald Muirhead began his Masters swimming career with the Inverclyde Club and has competed in both Scottish National, European and World Championships.   He began swimming at the age of 4 and brings many years experience to the Club having competed initially as a junior with the Wigton Throstle Nest Club in Cumbria.   During his time as a regular in the British Forces he competed and played Water Polo for the Coldstream Guards at Battalion and Divisional levels.

He took up coaching with the Kirkintilloch ASC in 1963 and continued with the Larkhall Avondale ASC in 1970 serving in that capacity for 7 and 5 years respectfully.   He was responsible for initiating and the implementation of development programmes, which brought great success to both Clubs at District and National levels.

His commitment and enthusiasm for swimming was recognised in 1995 by being elected by the members of Scottish Swimming to the post of National Convener for Masters Swimming in Scotland where he served in that position until he retired in 2003.

For his services to Scottish Swimming and in particular to Masters he was awarded Life Membership of the Association and in 2003 he was the first Scottish recipient of the Leonard and Viviane Cherriman Award  from the Great Britain Swimming Federation.

His enthusiasm and commitment continues and it is an excellent incentive for swimmers to become involved with the Club.
